  • Signed out, the Account tab now links businesses and groups to where they sign up on the website.

Installing it

The app is not in the Google Play store yet, so Android treats it like any file from a website and asks you to confirm a few times. That is expected.

  1. Download it on the phone. Open this page on your Android phone and press Download for Android. Because the file does not come from Google Play, Chrome may warn that it could be harmful. Choose to download it anyway.
  2. Open the file. Tap the notification when the download finishes, or find lincoln-town-square-1.6.0-7.apk under Downloads in your Files app.
  3. Allow the install, once. The first time, Android says your browser is not allowed to install apps. Tap Settings, allow it for this source, then go back.
  4. Install. Tap Install. If Google Play Protect says it does not recognise the app, choose to see more details and install anyway. It is the same app you would get from a store, signed by the same company every time.
  5. Open it. Everything is readable without an account. You can switch the browser permission back off afterwards; you only need it again to install an update.

Updating it

Download the new version from this page and install it over the one you have. You stay signed in, and nothing you saved is lost.

The app also tells you itself when a new version is ready, with a button that brings you here.

It says "App not installed"

The copy on your phone came from somewhere else, or is newer than this one. Uninstall the app, then install this version. If you were signed in, your saved items are kept with your account.

On iPhone

Not yet. The iPhone version will come through Apple TestFlight once the company behind this site finishes Apple's developer enrolment. Leave your email and we will tell you the day it opens.

What it asks your phone for

  • Camera Only when you choose to take a photo to send the newsroom.
  • Calendar Only when you add an event to your phone's calendar.
  • Photos and videos Only while you attach a photo or video. On newer phones it sees only the ones you pick.

Android asks you before the app uses any of these, and saying no only switches off the feature that needed it. It does not ask for your location, your contacts, the microphone.

Earlier versions

1.5.0 29 September 2026
  • If Lincoln Town Square can't be reached when you open the app, you now stay signed in and the app tries again, instead of signing you out.
  • When a new version is ready, "See what's new" now lists the changes in every version since yours, not only the newest.
1.4.0 29 September 2026
  • Upcoming events on Home now list only events that are still to come, soonest first.
  • An event on several dates, or a weekly meeting, now shows once on Home and on an organization's page, with how many more dates it has.
  • An event posted by an organization now shows the day it happens rather than the day it was posted.
  • An event that runs over several days now stays in Upcoming events until it ends, instead of disappearing once it starts.
  • When AI has rewritten part of a developing story, the story now says so plainly, with the date and time.
  • If your contribution is sent back for more detail, the app now shows which community standard applied, the same as when an editor sends it back.
  • Events, directory listings and organization pages now have a Share button at the top, which sends the page's website link.
  • Links to community notices, alerts, events, directory listings and organizations on lincolntownsquare.com can open straight in the app.
  • Home shows the latest news, notices, alerts and events again, instead of only directory listings.
  • Search now finds anything published, not just the newest posts, with the best match first.
  • "More like this" under an article now suggests more of the same kind, such as more news after a news story.
  • Articles, stories, events and listings now show their videos, Facebook posts, photos, links and headings the way the website does, instead of plain text only.
  • Creating an organization no longer turns away ordinary names that only contain words like "Lincoln, Maine" or "Mattanawcook", such as a local credit union or a booster club.
1.3.0 28 September 2026

Events that run on several days

  • The Directions button on a directory listing now takes you to the business's address instead of searching for its name.
  • An event that runs on several days with different hours, like a fair on Saturday 9 to 5 and Sunday 10 to 3, can now be sent in one go: turn on "Different days, different hours" and add each date with its own times.
  • An event's page lists its other dates, and each one opens its own event.
  • If an event's end time is before its start, the form now says so instead of changing the time for you.
1.2.0 28 September 2026

Events, notices and tips each get their own form

  • A reader's contribution to a developing story now shows in full on the story, photo included, and "See the contribution" takes you straight to it.
  • When an editor sends your contribution back or declines it, you see their message and the community standard it was based on, and you can add detail and send it again.
  • When a developing story is finished and published as a news story, it says so, points to the final report, and credits the readers who chose to be named. A new "How we credit you" setting lets you choose whether that includes you.
  • "Submit an event" now opens a real event form, with the date and time, all day, the place, the cost, a link, a category, a flyer and a contact for the editors.
  • The compose button asks what you are sharing (an event, a community notice, a news tip or a directory listing) and opens the right form for each.
  • A community notice has its own form, with a category.
  • If you are not signed in, the app asks you to sign in before you start filling in a form, and then takes you straight to it.
  • The tip form now keeps what you typed if you leave and come back.
  • Event pages show where the event is, what it costs and a link for tickets or more information, and "Add to calendar" uses the real place.
  • The events you send appear under My submissions, so you can see where they are in review.
  • Organizations adding an event can mark it all day, add the cost, a link, a category and a flyer, and pick any time of day.
1.1.0 27 September 2026
  • The account tab is now one calm page: anything that needs your attention near the top, then your submissions, saved items, follows and badges, your organizations, and settings.
  • Your submissions are grouped by where they are in review, and a new Badges page shows all three badges, with the ones you have earned filled in.
  • The app now tells you when a new version is ready, and shows what changed with a button to download it.
  • About this app, at the bottom of the account tab, shows which version you have and links to what changed in each one.
  • Sending a contribution now says plainly that nothing is turned down for its point of view, with a link to the community standards that list the only reasons one can be.
  • The ownership note now says the app is built on Town Square™, and tapping it opens the Town Square page.
  • The app no longer lists the microphone or "display over other apps" among its Android permissions. It never used either.

Only the newest version can be downloaded here. An older one would not install over a newer one anyway.
